Mercedes-Benz and a Toyota Vellfire seized for driving without Insurance

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) seized four luxury vehicles—including a Mercedes-Benz and a Toyota Vellfire—for lacking valid insurance and road tax during an operation in Shah Alam on 6 August 2025.

According to the New Straits Times, the vehicles were confiscated during a five-hour enforcement operation, “Ops Pengarah,” which began at 8:30 p.m. at the Kota Kemuning Toll Plaza along the Kesas Expressway.

One of the first vehicles stopped was a Mercedes-Benz S400 driven by a 41-year-old Chinese woman. Inspections revealed the car had been without valid road tax and insurance for over a year.

In a separate case, a 25-year-old Malaysian man was found driving a Toyota Vellfire MPV with expired road tax. He claimed the vehicle had been purchased by his brother three months earlier through a transfer of hire-purchase payments from the previous owner. The man also said he had requested the original owner to renew the road tax but was told it couldn’t be done due to outstanding summonses.

Both vehicles were impounded on the spot, and the drivers had to arrange e-hailing rides to return home.

Selangor JPJ director Azrin Borhan revealed that from January to July this year, the department recorded 16,735 cases of unlicensed driving and 25,338 road tax-related offences.

Meanwhile, a transport safety group claimed that some luxury car owners deliberately avoid renewing insurance and road tax, as paying the RM300 fine when caught is often seen as a cheaper alternative.
